I am sure every pet owner this time of month is struggling to keep thier pets cool, especially those pets that remain outdoors. I am always looking for a new way to help keep my buns cool. On the hompage I have listed a few good sites to lookup and read about cooling your rabbits. Many rabbit raisers have different ways and methods on every aspect of thier rabbittries. I will list a few ways that I have found help keep the bunnies a little cooler and the heat a little more tolerable:
* Always keep fresh water and change daily. (In the summer heat I will change my rabbit's water no less than 2 times a day.)
* Add ice cubes to their water. ( It helps cool the air around it and encourages the rabbits to drink more.)
* Save and freeze water/soda bottles with water in your freezer. (Placing them in your cages will help cool the air around the bottles. Some rabbits will lay next to them or even on them. It is a big help if you ask me.)
*Misting your rabbits (take a water hose with an attatchment and slightly mist your rabbits. I do this twice a day and found it helps tremendously. The rabbits may not like this idea right off the bat but once the figure out what you are doing and get use to the routine they begin to like it and stick their toungs out trying to get the water.LOL.)
*Always make sure that your rabbits are in the shade. (Even ten minutes in direct sunlight may be leathal to a rabbit.)
*Fans (if you are fortunate enough to have a small building of some sort fans help out a great deal to circulate the air and create a gentle breeze. Just make sure the fans are not directly blowing on your buns. Oscelating fans are ideal!
Well there are only a few of the dozens of ideas to help keep rabbits cool. Remember, if they were in the wild they would burrow and find a cool place, but in a cage they have no choice but to be out in it. It is up to you as a responsable Breeder or Owner to keep your rabbits comfortable! I am always interested in your thoughts on any matters I post and I would love to hear how other people atre keeping thier rabbits cool this summer.
